If you do one security thing this quarter, make it multi-factor authentication everywhere that matters. With stolen credentials now the number-one way in, MFA is the single highest-leverage control available to a small team, and it's cheap.
Start where an attacker would
Don't try to boil the ocean. Protect the accounts that would hurt most if compromised, in order:
- Email, the master key; password resets flow through it.
- Cloud & hosting consoles, AWS, Azure, your DNS and domain registrar.
- Code repositories, GitHub/GitLab, where your IP lives.
- Payment & finance tools, anything that can move money.
- Core SaaS admin panels.
Make it painless, or it won't stick
Security that fights users gets bypassed. A few things keep adoption high:
- Single sign-on (SSO) so people enroll once, not per app.
- Passkeys/biometrics for a tap-to-login experience.
- Trusted-device settings to cut prompt fatigue on managed machines.
- Clear recovery so a lost phone isn't a lockout crisis.
Good security is quiet. If your team barely notices MFA day to day, you've rolled it out right.
The rest of the essential stack
MFA is the front door. Behind it, small teams need a password manager, tested backups, device updates, centralized logging and alerts, and same-day access removal for people who leave. That's a complete, affordable baseline.
