"Move everything to one hyperscaler" is no longer the automatic answer. Sovereignty, edge computing and cost pressure have made cloud strategy a per-workload decision. This guide gives you a framework to make it well.

The four questions for every workload

  1. Data gravity & residency, where does the data live, and where is it legally allowed to go?
  2. Latency & resilience, how fast and how available does this need to be?
  3. Cost & lock-in, what's the real total cost, and how hard is it to leave later?
  4. Governance, can you monitor, secure and audit it consistently with everything else?

The options, honestly

  • Single hyperscaler, simplest, best economies of scale, but more lock-in.
  • Hybrid, hyperscaler for elastic compute, private/on-prem for regulated data.
  • Sovereign, full control over data, models and infrastructure, for regulated industries.
  • Edge, for latency-critical or intermittently-connected workloads.
The question is no longer "cloud or not." It's which workload belongs where, and how you keep them all governed as one system.

Control the cost

Whatever you choose, FinOps discipline, right-sizing, monitoring and avoiding idle capacity, is what keeps the cloud cheaper than what it replaced. Most organizations land on a hybrid answer and revisit it yearly.
